Sonya Casillas

On February 12, the beauty, excitement and charm of flamenco will once again grace the stage of the Odeon Theater. Sonya Casillas and her flamenco dancers, with flamenco guitarist Steve Arispe and flamenco singer Chayito Champion, join together as La Sonya y Gitanas. Sonya began her dancing career at age six with La Compania de Baileand and, by age 13, she had focused her studies on Spanish Folkloric, Spanish Classical and Flamenco. She has danced her way across America and to Spain while studying and performing classical flamenco. In the early 90s, she joined the Boston Flamenco Ballet Co., touring the east coast for two years, and later served as the troupe’s dance choreographer. She was the Flamenco and Folkloria instructor at the San Antonio Dance Academy. She has toured with the Jose Greco II Dance Co. and performed at a variety of events, including Fiesta Texas and Festival Flamenco Internacional de Albuquerque. She is the founder, dance director and instructor/choreographer for “La Sonya y Gitanas, which performs throughout the region.

Flamenco singer Chayito Champion began singing at an early age, carrying on the legacy of her family of flamenco artists. She is in high demand nationally and internationally, always captivating her audiences with her heartfelt and passionate performances. She has performed at venues including Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall in New York, and she has been honored with an H.O.L.A. Award and A.C.E. Latinos Critics Award, among others.

Steve Arispe is a San Antonio-based musician who specializes in flamenco. He began his studies at age 15 under the direction of Chayito Champion, Theresa Champion and Willie “El Curro” Champion. Steve has toured the U.S.. with Boston Flamenco Ballet and has performed with renowned Flamenco artists from the U.S. and from Spain.
