Get ready for another blockbuster Classic Movie Night at the Odeon. Dances With Wolves is a classic 1990 epic Western film starring, directed, and produced by Kevin Costner in his feature directorial debut. The film was nominated for 12 Academy Awards at the 63rd Academy Awards and won seven, including Best Picture, Best Director for Costner, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Film Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score and Best Sound Mixing. It is one of only three Westerns to ever win the Oscar for Best Picture. The film also won the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Drama.
Dances With Wolves is credited as a leading influence for the revitalization of the Western genre of filmmaking in Hollywood. It is included on the American Film Institute’s list of 100 greatest movies. In 2007, Dances with Wolves was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."
The film tells the story of Union Army Lieutenant John J. Dunbar (Costner), who travels to the American frontier to find a military post, which he discovers is deserted. He soon learns he is not alone, however, as he meets a wolf he dubs "Two-socks" and gradually earns the respect of the Lakota Sioux native people, who name him “Dances with Wolves.”
Much of the dialogue is spoken in Lakota with English subtitles. It was shot from July to November 1989 in South Dakota and Wyoming. Because of the film's popularity and lasting impact on the image of Native Americans, members of the Lakota Sioux Nation held a ceremony in Washington D. C., "to honor Kevin [Costner] and Mary [McDonnell] and Jim [Wilson] on behalf of the Indian Lakota nation." Kevin Costner did all his own riding, including bareback and shooting his gun without holding the reins, during the buffalo hunt.
