Classic Movie Night is back at the Odeon with Jaws, one of the all-time great films. Often considered the first modern summer blockbuster, Jaws was released in 1975 and became a breakthrough for director Steven Spielberg. Frustrated by malfunctioning mechanical sharks in the filming, Spielberg and the crew came up with inventive solutions involving unusual editing and camera angles. He also decided mostly to suggest the shark's presence, employing an ominous and minimalist theme created by composer John Williams to indicate its impending appearances. Jaws won three Academy Awards, for Best Film Editing, Best Original Dramatic Score and Best Sound. The film was also nominated for Best Picture. In 2001, it was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."
In the film, it's a hot summer on Amity Island, a small New England community whose main business is its beaches. When a man-eating Great White shark starts to attack beachgoers, police chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) decides to hunt it with the help of a marine biologist Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and a professional shark hunter, Quint (Robert Shaw), culminating in an epic battle of man vs. nature. As Brody observes after their first encounter with the creature, “You’re gonna need a bigger boat.”
