Drama/Family/Musical ‧ G ‧ 2h 50m ‧ 1964
The January free Classic Movie Night features the perennial favorite, My Fair Lady. The classic musical stars Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison. The film was nominated for 12 Academy Awards and won eight, including Best Picture, Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Director and Best Music. It also won Best Picture — Comedy or Musical at the Golden Globes, and was voted Best Film in 1964 at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards. In 2018, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." It was also included on the American Film Institute’s “100 Years…100 Movies” list and their “Greatest Movie Musicals” list.
The film was adapted from the 1956 Lerner and Loewe stage musical based on George Bernard Shaw’s stage play Pygmalion. The story is set in 1910s London, where pompous phonetics Professor Henry Higgins (Sir Rex Harrison) is so sure of his abilities that he takes it upon himself to transform a Cockney working-class girl into someone who can pass for a cultured member of high society. His subject turns out to be the lovely Eliza Doolittle (Audrey Hepburn), who agrees to speech lessons to improve her job prospects. Higgins and Eliza clash, then form an unlikely bond, one that is threatened by aristocratic suitor Freddy Eynsford-Hill (Jeremy Brett).
The Odeon’s Classic Movie Night is the third Wednesday of each month. Admission is always free but we appreciate your donations, which enable us to continue offering these special movie presentations.
