The March free Classic Movie Night features the 1955 film Rebel Without a Cause, starring James Dean, Natalie Wood and Sal Mineo. Dennis Hopper made his film debut in a small role. The film is included in the American Film Institute’s “100 Years...100 Movies” list and was nominated for three Academy Awards including Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Mineo and Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Wood. In 1990, it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” The movie was released on October 27, 1955, less than a month after James Dean, whose performance was praised all around by film critics, died in a car accident.
The coming-of-age drama about emotionally confused suburban, middle class teenagers, focuses on a rebellious young man with a troubled past who comes to a new town, finding friends and enemies. The film holds a 93% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes with a critical consensus that “Rebel Without a Cause is a searing melodrama featuring keen insight into '50s juvenile attitude and James Dean's cool, iconic performance."
