Tootsie, the 1982 award-winning comedy classic, received critical acclaim for its humor, dialogue, social commentary and Dustin Hoffman and Jessica Lange's performances, when it was originally released. The film was directed by Sydney Pollack and also stars Teri Garr, Dabney Coleman and Charles Durning. Included on the American Film Institute’s “The 100 Greatest American Films of All Time” list, the film was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and won Best Supporting Actress for Lange. In 1998, Tootsie was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."
In the film, Michael Dorsey (Hoffman) is an unemployed actor with an impossible reputation. In order to find work and fund his friend's play he dresses as a woman, Dorothy Michaels, and lands the part in a daytime drama. Dorsey loses himself in this woman role and essentially becomes Dorothy Michaels, captivating women all around the city and inspiring them to break free from the control of men and become more like Dorsey's initial identity. This newfound role, however, lands Dorsey in a hot spot between a female friend/'lover,' a female co-star he falls in love with, that co-star's father who falls in love with him, and a male co-star who yearns for his affection.
