Comedy/Musical/Romance ‧ PG ‧ 1h 52m ‧ 1978
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. So this month, we’re showing a special classic movie, Grease, which honors the late Olivia Newton-John and is an opportunity to contribute to the fight against cancer. Due to the generosity of a local underwriter, all money donated at the film showing will benefit the Mason County Cancer Benefit (MCCB), a local 501(c)3 non-profit. MCCB provides charitable assistance to residents of Mason County who are suffering from cancer. Their goal is to ease the burden of worry when times are hard by providing help with gas and lodging expense for those traveling for treatment as well as helping with the cost of some medicines, if needed.
As always, admission to Classic Movie Nights is free.
This 1978 American musical romantic comedy, which stars Oliva Newton-John and John Travolta, was successful both critically and commercially, becoming the highest grossing musical film ever at the time. Its soundtrack album ended 1978 as the second-best-selling album of the year in the U.S. and earned an Oscar nomination for "Hopelessly Devoted to You" at the 51st Academy Awards. In 2020, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
The movie is a musical about teens in love in the 1950s. It's California 1958 and greaser Danny Zuko (John Travolta) and Australian Sandy Olsson (Olivia Newton-John) are in love. They spend time at the beach, and when they go back to school, what neither of them knows is that they both now attend Rydell High. Danny's the leader of the T-Birds, a group of black leather jacket-wearing greasers while Sandy hangs with the Pink Ladies, a group of pink-wearing girls led by Rizzo (Stockard Channing). When they clash at Rydell's first pep rally, Danny isn't the same Danny from the beach. They try to be like each other so they can be together.
Admission is always free for the Odeon’s Classic Movie Nights, but your donations to the Mason County Cancer Benefit at the showing of Grease will be appreciated.
