Drama/Mystery/Thriller ‧ R ‧ 2h 10m ‧ 1974
The January 15 free Classic Movie Night at the Odeon features “Chinatown,” the 1974 award-winning mystery/drama starring Jack Nicholson, Faye Dunaway and John Huston. Directed by Roman Polanski, the film features many elements of film noir, particularly a multi-layered story that is part mystery and part psychological drama. In the movie, Nicholson plays a private detective hired to expose a cheating spouse in 1930s Los Angeles only to find himself caught up in a web of deceit, corruption and murder.
The film is often cited as one of the greatest films of all time. It was nominated for 11 Oscars and won Best Original Screenplay. The Golden Globe Awards honored “Chinatown” as Best Drama, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Screenplay. The American Film Institute placed it second among the top ten mystery films, and in 1991, the film was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry as being "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant."
