Texas Comedies will stage their musical comedy Prohibition at the Odeon on June 11. Set in Texas, this one-hour musical comedy tells the true story of the fight between the "Drys" and the "Wets." Breweries, ballot box stuffing, bribery, the Klan, suffragettes, Temperancers and World War I all play a part in this one-hour musical comedy with a live band. In this show, the son of a prominent brewer and saloon owner falls for an over-the-top Temperancer. Sparks fly and barrels roll!
The story is based on Milton Morris, Chairman of the Anti-Saloon League, who claimed there would be a reduction in “crime and immorality” if Prohibition was passed. The "Drys" tied the issue to anti-German sentiment during World War I, urging its passage as a moral stance on the war.
It wasn’t until 1918 that most of Central Texas was voted dry. A year later Texas ratified the national Prohibition amendment. “Crime and immorality,” however, were not reduced.
