Get ready for a very special evening when Walt and Tina Wilkins and Sam Baker and Ashlie Wallace share the stage at the Odeon on March 8. These master storytellers and gifted musicians promise a memorable performance.
A near constant presence on the Texas Music Chart since its inception, Walt Wilkins has been called a genius, a poet and a Texas treasure. His work has been likened to the greatest and most timeless of the Texas/American troubadours and his writing has even been compared to John Steinbeck. His well crafted story-songs, hard-edged vocals and plaintive guitar have made him a fixture of the Texas music scene. Walt has over 100 songs recorded by other artists and has released eight solo records, including four with his band The Mystiqueros, and one with his singer-songwriter wife, Tina. Tina is a highly-regarded performer and writer in her own right. After stops in Los Angeles and Nashville, where she was an in-demand session and stage singer, she has developed a reputation as a writer with a unique eye for everyday life. Tina has released six solo albums as well as the duet record with Walt.
Mason County resident Sam Baker is a lyric writer, artist, and survivor. His songs are stories of everyday people facing everyday challenges. In fact, the Wall Street Journal once called Sam, “The Bard of the Workaday World.” The defining moment in Sam’s life came in 1986 when a terrorist bomb exploded in his train car on a trip to Machu Picchu in Peru. Seven died and Sam was gravely injured. Through a series of miracles, he survived, and the consequent physical, emotional, and spiritual journey he experienced helped him form his passionate view of the world and develop his uniquely hushed and quietly powerful performance style. Since his acclaimed debut in 2004, Sam has released a string of well-received albums that evoke the austere melodicism of Townes Van Zandt and the heart and humor of John Prine’s narrative style. Johnson City native Ashlie Wallace has been touring with Sam for four years and sings on Sam’s last record, Win Win.
